Frequently asked questions

Why do you teach in groups?

All children genuinely want to learn to play an instrument, but all too often their initial enthusiasm quickly fades, and they become resistant to practice, or attending lessons.  A group lesson format helps children through this difficult starting-up phase by making music study a social activity rather than a solitary pursuit.  In addition, a child's sense of rhythm, pitch, and overall musical intuition is much more easily developed through the use of group singing and ensemble playing.

Why do you use keyboards?

We believe the keyboard should be a child's first musical instrument, as it visually represents music so well, and basic playing skills are easily acquired.  Most instrumental teachers agreee that a piano background greatly enhances a child's ability to master other instruments later on.

What kind of piano do I need?

Any type of keyboard instrument, acoustic or electronic, may be used for at-home practice, providing the keys are full-sized, and the range is four octaves (49 keys) or more.  No home instrument is necessary for The Music In Me Course.

When do new classes start?

New classes can begin at any time during the academic year (September-June).  A minimum number of students (usually eight) is required before a new class can begin.  Send an email to< ppiper@gte.net> or call the education office at 425 478 0566 or 206 365 8565 to find out what times are currently available, and which new classes are in the process of forming.
